Network, Network, Network
In real estate, the three most important things to consider are location, location, location. In your career search, the three most important things to consider are your contacts, contacts, contacts. Why are your contacts so important? It is a known fact that only 25-30% of all jobs in the United States today are advertised jobs. That means that approximately 75% are UN advertised positions. This is where your contacts come into play in your job search, and why they are so important to your success. Statistically, more jobs are found through networking than any other means of obtaining employment.
Many times a person will work diligently getting their resume updated, they write the perfect cover letter, they mail hundreds of letters in their job search campaign, only to find themselves sitting by the phone waiting for someone to call. With the unemployment rate as high as it is currently, it doesn’t take one long to figure out that for every resume a person sends for an advertised job, hundreds of other people, many more qualified than they are are applying for the same position.
For these reasons, it becomes very apparent how important networking really is. To boost you chances of landing an interview and possibly the job, call everyone you know and let them know that you are looking for a new job. This will dramatically increase your chances of finding your next position. It will not only help you get your foot in the door somewhere, but you might also find out about some of the unadvertised positions that we discussed earlier. Never forget how important your contacts can be in your job search success.
