Promotion Indicator

Have you ever been passed up for a promotion and wonderd why?  Of course there are many many factors that go into the decision to promote someone, however, many times there is a big disconnect between the manager doing the promoting and the employee being passed over.

After spending over 25 years in the human resource arena, the one key element that seems to go the furthest in helping someone climb the corporate ladder is their attitude.     What I have found when dealing with an employee who has been left wondering why they were passed over is a manager who has decided to promote someone with a “can do” attitude.

Many times a person will feel that they are giving 150% and just can’t understand why the job wasn’t given to them, the reason many times is their attitude.   Employers want people who are pleasant, hard working and with that “can do” attitude.

If you are one of those people who have been passed over, ask yourself this question.  Have I always had a good attitude toward my work and my co-workers?  If the answer is yes, then maybe your attitude isn’t a factor in the decision to promote you.  But if your answer is no, then you should take a hard look in the mirror and make the necessary adjustments.

Your attitude is all yours.  You are given a choice each and every morning before you begin your day.  You can either have a great attitude about things, or a not so great attitude.  But the choice is yours.  Just remember if you want to climb the corporate ladder, your expertise will only get you so far.  Without a great attitude, you will never reach your fullest career potential.

So in closing, remember one of the best promotability indicator is within you.  Its your attitude and you and only you are in control of it.

Network, Network, Network

In real estate, the three most important things to consider are location, location, location.  In your career search, the three most important things to consider are your contacts, contacts, contacts.  Why are your contacts so important?  It is a known fact that only 25-30% of all jobs in the United States today are advertised jobs.  That means that approximately 75% are UN advertised positions.  This is where your contacts come into play in your job search, and why they are so important to your success.  Statistically, more jobs are found through networking than any other means of obtaining employment.

Many times a person will work diligently getting their resume updated, they write the perfect cover letter, they mail hundreds of letters in their job search campaign, only to find themselves sitting by the phone waiting for someone to call.  With the unemployment rate as high as it is currently, it doesn’t take one long to figure out that for every resume a person sends for an advertised job, hundreds of other people, many more qualified than they are are applying for the same position.

For these reasons, it becomes very apparent how important networking really is.  To boost you chances of landing an interview and possibly the job, call everyone you know and let them know that you are looking for a new job.  This will dramatically increase your chances of finding your next position.  It will not only help you get your foot in the door somewhere, but you might also find out about some of the unadvertised positions that we discussed earlier.  Never forget how important your contacts can be in your job search success.
